The Zine-ified Refusal of Work
A downloadable zine
This is a collection of my annotations on the book The Refusal of Work by David Frayne. It's 20 pages consisting of excerpts from the book, along with my highlights and annotations.
For the accessible version, download the txt file instead of the pdf. It is in Markdown format (which is a standard set of simple notations for web formatting that indicate headers, bold, etc). To see it displayed, you can copy/paste the contents of the file to Markdown Live Preview. Shoutout to TheFrugalGamer's project for reminding me that plaintext is great!
Overall thoughts on the book: Theory/books/papers by academics have a reputation for being hard to understand, but I found this book a relatively easier read. I appreciated that it was grounded in real life quotes from ordinary people trying to live by their values. It includes parts about both the struggles and the rewards, which I liked because it feels honest. It touches on the relationship between work and disability, and there are parts about interviewees with chronic mental or physical health concerns. It was definitely a really impactful read for me, especially as a young adult whose life was recently derailed lol.
